What's included💳 You may not need to pay it all up front. There is a NSW government loan of up to $15,000 with no interest to pay, for people who own their home in NSW and whose household earns under $210,000 a year. Read the government page — we checked it on 2026-08-17. Note: that loan needs a NETCC Approved Seller for solar and battery work, and we are not one yet — so it is not something we can set up for you today.
What would stay on in a blackout?
Pick a battery size, and pick what you would want kept running. Set up the right way, this is roughly how long it would last.
Set up for backup, a 13.5 kWh battery keeps the important things going for
about 25 to 42 hours — more than a day
when the battery is new. A little less as it gets older.

Even a small battery runs the important things for a good while. You do not need a big one just to keep the fridge, the lights and the wifi on.
This only works if it is set up for backup. Many batteries switch off with the grid unless you add a backup switch and its own wiring. We tell you exactly what yours would do before you buy, not after.

These are rough numbers from normal appliances. Your real time depends on what you switch on. A battery also holds a little less each year as it gets older, about 4% a year, so the backup time gets shorter over the years.
Set up the right way, your panels can also fill the battery back up on a sunny day. That helps the important things keep going through a longer blackout.

Is a battery right for you yet?
For most homes the everyday win is real. You save your cheap daytime sun and use it in the dear evening, and you get backup when you need it. Whether it pays for the money you spend depends on how much power you use at night, how much solar you have, and the plan you are on. If it does not add up for you yet, we say so.
Why it matters who fits it
The government inspected battery installs done under the rebate. This is what they found.
60.8% of the battery installs the regulator inspected were substandard, and 1.2% were unsafe.

Yes, it can keep your power on in a blackout
Fridge cold, lights on, wifi working, while the rest of the street is dark. A battery can do that. Here is the part most sellers skip: not every battery keeps your power on. Two things decide whether yours would.
Backup is not in the price
It needs a backup switch and its own wiring, and it is quoted separately. Without it a battery shuts down in a blackout like everything else — that is a safety rule, so the inverter cannot push power into a line someone might be working on.
And it is not the whole house
It runs a set list of circuits — fridge, lights, wifi, a few power points. Big things like ducted aircon, the oven and a car charger stay off it. A bigger battery buys you more hours, not more appliances.
Should you join a VPP?
A VPP (Virtual Power Plant) lets a power company use a little of your battery when the grid is under pressure, like a hot summer evening. They pay you for it. You can join one and still get the government battery rebate — one does not stop the other.
✅ The good side
- •Extra money coming in. How much depends on the plan, so we work out a real number for your set-up.
- •There may be a NSW payment on top, though the amount changes from company to company.
- •You help the grid on the worst days, and still keep some power set aside for yourself.
⚠️ The catch
- •Your battery wears a little faster — a few extra fill-ups a year.
- •You lose some control. They may use part of your battery before an evening you wanted it full.
- •Some batteries count the warranty differently once you join a VPP. Check before you sign.
“Do you ever fill my battery from the grid?”
If the answer is yes, you can end up paying for power you did not use, at a time you did not pick. Get the answer in writing before you sign anything.
